PTA Tax Update 2024

A few years back, the government of Pakistan introduced a new customs duty tax on all smartphones that are either imported from abroad, or someone sends them as a gift to you or your family. This tax is called “PTA Tax”. The smartphone won’t work with Pakistani sims if the user has not paid this tax. You can use the phone for photography or with WiFi, but the network abilities of the phone, like making calls every network, mobile data or SMS, won’t work. The amount of tax is substantial, at times almost half the price of the smartphone. Which makes branded phones such as the Apple iPhone unaffordable for the masses of Pakistan. This substantial amount of taxes resulted in people using tricks and tips to avoid paying the tax while using iPhones. Considering the situation, the government of Pakistan and the Customs authorities have decided to revise the tax amount and decrease it for the people. In this article, we will present you with the updated and revised list of PTA Tax on iPhones, which will be applicable to all iPhone models such as iPhone 15, iPhone 14 and so on.

New Valuations of Apple iPhone by Customs Pakistan:

In Pakistan, the federal authorities have instituted multiple smartphone taxes, encompassing customs duties, sales tax, and withholding tax. The extent of taxation fluctuates based on various factors, including the smartphone’s value and type. Notably, the prices of well-known mobile phone brands are bound to escalate in Pakistan due to a substantial increase in customs tax applied to importing nearly all mobile phone models into the country. This article presents users with a comprehensive list of PTA Tax on iPhone in 2024, offering valuable insights for individuals looking to make informed decisions when purchasing or updating their devices.

The pricing of iPhones was established according to Section 25A of the Customs Act, 1969, through Valuation Ruling No. 1732/2023 issued on January 23, 2023. However, this existing valuation ruling, which is approximately a year old, does not accurately reflect the current values prevailing in the international market. Additionally, some older iPhone models have reached the end of their life, necessitating consideration for depreciation. Consequently, the Directorate General of Customs Valuation conducted a thorough assessment to determine the values of mobile phones and introduced a new list of valuations of branded smartphones. We have used this list by the Directorate General of Customs Valuation to deduce the tax amount on each iPhone model.
